Established in the confectionery industry, DISCH is a leading manufacturer in Europe regarding the development and contract manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and food supplements. Jakob Disch formed the company DISCH in 1903 and over the years DISCH perfected the manufacture of food, biscuits and sweets. 1967 DISCH began to produce lozenges. In 1993 the company was approved by Swissmedic – the Swiss medicinal institute for the manufacture of medicines. Presently DISCH specialises in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products and dietary supplements.
On recommendation, Drycool Engineering Systems Ltd were approached by DISCH to offer their expertise in making their manufacturing process more efficient & environmentally friendly. Drycool Engineering Systems Ltd carried out a test installation in one of the drying chambers. The existing installation had a 160 kW compressor which took 96 hours to dry gum Arabic. The newly installed Drycool System used a 4.5 kW compressor and completed the task in 24 hours.
DOMACO INCREASED PRODUCTION WITH REDUCED ENERGY COSTS
Domaco is a well-established Swiss company with a rapidly expanding market producing pharmaceuticals, food supplements, lozenges, tablets, pastilles, jellies and instant granules.
Increasing demand for a speciality product required the installation of a new environmentally friendly drying system that would operate with a reduction in energy consumption as the factory area designated for the production was close to the limit of the existing power available.
A Drycool Engineering Systems heat pump-based drying/cooling system was installed and following extensive monitoring of both product quality and energy consumption was able to demonstrate a Coefficient of Performance figure of 4 : 1 a satisfying result. Reducing drying time by 50% and the drying cost by 83% using a Drycool Engineering Systems Heat Pump Dehumidification and Cooling System.
SOLDAN
SOLDAN EXPANDS PRODUCTION WITH A 60% REDUCTION IN ENERGY COSTS
Future development at Soldan involved the planned expansion into the manufacture of pharmaceutical products in addition to their already well-established confectionery product range.
In addition to the demanding manufacturing standards levied by health regulatory bodies was the need to cut energy consumption in accordance with the Company’s commitment to reduce harmful CO2 emissions.
The requirement was to produce a heat pump drying system capable of operating with gelatin-based items, typically 25°C temperature and 30% relative humidity and also gum arabic products that require drying conditions of 70°C temperature and 20% relative humidity.
Drycool Engineering Systems Ltd designed and installed a system capable of achieving the requirements at the same time succeeded in reducing drying schedules from 280 hrs to 48 hrs plus a 60% reduction in energy consumption. This unique plant was also able to control the quality of the processing starch so obviating the need for a separate energy-intensive starch dryer.
To control the drying operation Drycool Engineering Systems Ltd utilised a programmable logic controller with bespoke software that enabled remote monitoring and adjustment.

CHEP oversees the world’s largest pool of reusable pallets and containers, having operations in 60 countries.
Transporting bulk products such as sugar, flour or grain mainly utilises timber pallets. Unfortunately, each timber pallet can absorb up to 9kg of water when subjected to damp environments during storage or transportation leading to increasing costs in shipment, handling and product storage.
Traditionally timber drying consists of stacking the product in insulated chambers and heating the chamber with steam or gas-fired devices to drive the moisture out of the timber followed by venting the moisture-laden air into the atmosphere.
Drycool Engineering Systems Ltd heat pump systems operate in an enclosed environment recovering heat from the moisture removed from the timber and recycling the warm air created by the heat pump cycle to reabsorb more moisture. This continual cycle reduces the moisture content of the timber from 70% to 20% relative humidity without the need for venting and the subsequent rejection of heat to the atmosphere.
High-temperature heat pumps were manufactured and installed by Drycool Engineering Systems Ltd capable of operating at 70°C at Unit Pallet Group, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of timber pallets and reduced drying times to 48hrs and crucially achieved drying costs of 0.14p per pallet.
Co-efficient of Performance figures of 4.2 : 1 has been achieved using this principle with large reductions in costly energy consumption.
The success of this project has led to more systems being installed in Holland, France and Portugal by Drycool Engineering Systems Ltd.
